The terror of being off the grid

I couldn't put my finger on why the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 was so unsettling. There are many reasons. Farhad Manjoo of the New York Times put words to the most profound sentiment of all: even though we're hyper-connected in our daily lives with never a moment "off the grid," there remain places on our planet where it is impossible to ping our location. This is simultaneously comforting and discomforting. While it's healthy to be unplugged from time to time, it strikes terror into my heart when I imagine that 239 people on board a plane can vanish without a trace. I'm certain I'm not alone...
